Laser Engraving Machine Checklist: 6 Steps I Used Before Buying Our Trotec

When my boss put a laser engraver on my purchasing list last year, I did what any admin would do: I searched “best at home laser engraver” and fell into a spec-sheet rabbit hole. In our case, “home” means a 28-person packaging company with a workshop behind the office. Small, but still commercial.

I spent five months on this project. I typed “trotec-laser” into Google so often it autocompleted. I looked up the “Trotec laser Speedy 100” specifications, requested quotes from three different suppliers, and took two demo trips. The purchase ended up being about half machine, half process. This is the checklist I used to keep the process honest.

Step 1: List the jobs you’ll run in week one

Laser type follows material, not budget.

  • CO2 lasers handle wood, acrylic, leather, paper, glass and coated metal well. This is the default for mixed workshops.
  • Optical fiber lasers are better suited to direct metal marking — stainless steel tags, aluminum nameplates, tooling and some plastics.
  • Diode lasers can get a small shop started on wood and leather, but the material window is narrower.

I initially assumed we needed an optical fiber laser because a client had asked about metal tags. The demo looked impressive. Then I listed our week-one jobs: acrylic display signs, wood packaging inserts, and a small batch of leather tags. That list pointed to CO2, not fiber.

One misconception that slowed me down was the idea that an optical fiber laser belongs on a factory floor. That thinking comes from an era when fiber systems cost multiples of what they cost now. The pricing gap has narrowed, but the material logic hasn’t changed.

If you’re searching “best at home laser engraver” for a side business, that’s fine. Just remember: home or work, the question stays the same. Does this machine run the materials you’ll actually process, at a speed you can sell?

Step 2: Rebuild the quote before you look up “Trotec laser machine price”

Searching for a Trotec laser machine price will give you a base number. It will not give you the number finance approves. When I rebuilt the first quote, these items were missing or optional:

  • Fume extraction system
  • Air compressor for cutting
  • Rotary attachment, if you engrave curved items
  • Installation and operator training
  • Spare lenses, mirrors and cleaning supplies

Don’t hold me to the exact gap, but the difference between a bare machine quote and a production-ready setup was enough to make me read every line twice. We also budgeted for a maintenance kit, which I initially saw as an upsell. It turned out to be reasonable cost of ownership.

I was tempted to skip training and learn from YouTube. Upside: saved money. Risk: an expensive machine sitting idle because the operator didn’t know how to adjust focus for different material thicknesses. That’s not a risk. It’s a certainty.

Step 3: Test the software workflow before you test the laser

At a demo, every machine looks fast because someone else is driving it. The part that matters is what happens between the design file and the start button.

During the Trotec visit, I asked the engineer to walk me through JobControl, the software used with their systems. I wanted to see how a design import becomes a cutting or engraving job, how colors map to power and speed, and how hard it is to accidentally run a job at the wrong settings.

If you come from a printing background, you know the standard: commercial print at 300 DPI at final size. Laser systems use resolution differently, so don’t get hypnotized by a high DPI spec. Ask for the actual settings that produced the sample sitting on the table. If they can’t tell you, the sample is not reproducible.

Step 4: Send your own materials for a test run

I sent each supplier a small box with our actual materials: poplar plywood, clear acrylic, and one stainless steel tag from a client project. The request was simple — run these and send them back with the settings documented.

The supplier that did this well didn’t just send back results. They wrote down the speed, power, frequency, and lens/focus notes. That became our starting library for those materials.

If a supplier won’t test your materials before you buy, you’ve already learned something important. I kept thinking of FTC advertising guidance — claims should be substantiated. My procurement version: if a performance claim isn’t documented in the quote, I don’t consider it a real claim.

(Note to self: this rule didn’t just apply to lasers. I use it for every equipment order now.)

Step 5: Plan the rotary work before you order

I lost a week to a language issue. If you search for “rotary engraving machine,” you mostly find mechanical engraving systems with spinning bits. That’s not the same as a laser rotary attachment.

A laser rotary attachment holds and rotates cylindrical objects — tumblers, bottles, handles — so the laser can work around the circumference instead of only on a flat surface.

We didn’t order it with the machine. That turned out to be the right call for us, because our first cylindrical client order didn’t appear until month four. By that time we had a clearer diameter range and bought the right attachment instead of guessing.

Step 6: Test them the way a small customer would

This step sounds soft, but it’s the one that saved us. Before signing, I sent one email from a generic address. I explained that we were a two-person workshop considering our first laser, probably running it only a few hours a week, and asked basic questions about power, ventilation and service.

One company answered within a day. That ended up being Trotec. Another took a week and made me feel small. Small doesn’t mean unimportant. The vendor that took our small pre-sale questions seriously was the same vendor that took our small post-sale problems seriously.

Watch-outs: what I would check again next time

  • Size for the week-one job, not the dream job. We nearly bought a larger machine because we imagined future clients. I’m glad we didn’t.
  • Put training in the purchase order. It’s harder to get after the sale.
  • Check your room before the machine arrives. We had to move benches and install heavy-duty exhaust ducting after the machine was already on a truck.
  • Keep every test sample with settings written on it. Samples without settings are just free coasters.

If you run this checklist before you buy, you still might not get every decision right. But you won’t make my first mistake: searching for a machine before searching your own workshop for what it actually needs to cut.
