Trotec Laser Engraving Machines: 7 Questions Every Small Business Buyer Should Ask (From a Fellow Purchaser)

I handle purchasing for a 30-person company that does custom signage and awards. We bought our first Trotec laser two years ago—a Speedy 300. Before that I’d spent months comparing quotes, reading specs, and making mistakes. If you’re a small business owner or the person who gets asked to “find us a laser engraver,” this FAQ is for you.

I’ll give you the honest answers I wish someone had given me. And yes, I’ll include the numbers (roughly) and the stupid decisions I made along the way.


1. “Which Trotec laser engraving machine should a small business start with?”

If you’re like me, you want something versatile but not overkill. The Trotec Speedy 300 is the sweet spot for most small shops. It handles CO2 and fiber (if you get the Flexx model), works on wood, acrylic, leather, glass, and even some metals with marking spray. We went with the Speedy 300 after comparing it to the Speedy 100 (too small for our average order) and the Speedy 400 (too expensive for a first machine).

That said, don’t automatically rule out the Speedy 100 if your projects are mostly small plaques or tags. A colleague of mine runs a one-person Etsy shop and swears by hers. But for us, the 300’s 24″ × 18″ work area gave us room to grow.

Oh, and one thing I should add: the Speedy 300’s 60W CO2 laser is plenty for cutting ¼” acrylic and engraving most woods. If you think you’ll be cutting metal or thick materials, look at the fiber models instead. (We didn’t, and later wished we’d bought the Flexx.)

2. “Trotec lasers cost more than other brands—is it worth it?”

I had the same doubt. Our first quote for a Trotec Speedy 300 was around $27,000—maybe $28,000 with the rotary attachment, I’d have to check. That’s almost double some Chinese-brand machines. But here’s what the “cheaper” option cost me:

Saved $4,000 by ordering a no-name 60W CO2 machine. Ended up spending $1,200 on repairs in the first year (power supply failed, tube leaked). Net loss: time and frustration.

The real value of Trotec isn’t just the hardware—it’s the software (JobControl), the material database, the tech support that actually answers the phone. And the reliability. Our Speedy 300 has run 8+ hours a day for two years. I can count the service visits on one hand. In my opinion, if you depend on the machine for revenue, the premium is justified.

Put another way: you’re not paying for a laser tube. You’re paying for uptime and a vendor who treats small customers like they matter.

3. “Can you really laser engrave a mirror? I’ve heard mixed things.”

Yes, but it’s trickier than you think. The common advice is “use a low-power CO2 laser to remove the back coating.” That’s oversimplified. The nuance: mirror engraving works best on two-way mirrors or mirrors with a specific paint backing. Standard mirrors often have a coating that melts rather than flakes cleanly, leaving a blob.

We messed up our first batch. I said “engrave a mirror like you’d engrave glass.” The laser operator heard “use the same settings as glass.” Result: melted edges that looked nothing like the sample. We had to toss six mirrors—cost us about $150 in materials. Now we test a small area first with power at 15% and speed at 80% for our CO2 tube.

If you’re doing mirror engraving seriously, look for a Trotec with the “Mirror Engraving” preset (yes, they have one in the material library). It’s not perfect for every mirror brand, but it’s a decent starting point.

4. “What’s the best laser engraver for wood projects—especially for a beginner?”

If wood projects are your main thing, the trotec laser speedy 300 or even the Speedy 100 will do beautifully. The key is understanding wood species. Maple engraves light and crisp. Cherry gives a dark contrast. But plywood? The glue lines can create uneven results. We learned this the hard way when a client ordered 50 coasters from Baltic birch ply and half had burn marks in the glue pockets.

My advice: start with a 60W CO2 and a rotary attachment if you plan to do cylindrical items like mugs or rolling pins. Trotec’s fiber lasers (standard Yb fiber at 1064 nm) are what you want for marking stainless steel, aluminum, or tool steel. The Speedy 300 with Flexx gives you both CO2 and fiber in one machine.

Part of me thought “more wavelengths = more capabilities.” Another part knew I’d never use the erbium. I compromised: bought the Flexx with CO2 + Yb fiber. Haven’t needed erbium once.

6. “How do I avoid getting ripped off as a small buyer? Vendors treat me differently because I only need one machine.”

Oh, that bothers me. When I was starting out, I called a few big distributors and got put on hold forever. One salesman literally said, “We usually work with companies that order 10+ units.” (I still remember that.) But here’s the thing: Trotec itself has a small business program—at least through their local reps. You can get training sessions, demo days, even financing options without a huge MOQ.

The FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov) say product claims must be truthful and substantiated. So if a vendor promises “24/7 support” for a $5k machine, audit that. We had a vendor who claimed “lifetime warranty” on the tube—turned out it was 90 days pro-rated. Not exactly lifetime.

My rule: small orders deserve the same service as big ones. If a sales rep treats you poorly during the demo, imagine how they’ll treat you when something breaks. Walk away.

7. “What’s the one thing about Trotec lasers that surprised you after purchase?”

The software. I expected hardware to be solid. I didn’t expect JobControl to be so powerful—and so picky. Our first week we struggled with file import settings. I told our designer “just send an SVG.” They sent an SVG with embedded fonts. The machine interpreted it wrong and cut outside the lines. Cost us a weekend.

Learn the material database. Trotec has an extensive library of presets for speed, power, frequency, and passes. Use them as a starting point, but always test. Also, the rotary attachment alignment takes practice. (Should mention: we broke the first rotary chuck by over-tightening. $400 replacement.)

If you’re a small buyer, budget some money for training—either from Trotec or a local user group. The machine is capable, but you need to learn its quirks. In my opinion, that’s true of any industrial equipment, not just Trotec.
