There isn't a single best Trotec laser etcher. If a dealer tells you one machine will handle every job, don't buy it from him. That's not because Trotec makes bad equipment—it's because the right laser depends on what you're cutting, how often, and what a failed part costs you.
I'm a quality manager at a fabrication company, and I've spent the last six years reviewing laser cut files, inspecting first articles, and watching operators try to fix problems that should've been caught in the machine selection stage. For marking serial numbers, data-matrix codes, or logos on bare metal, Trotec's fiber-based systems are the right family. For structural welding of aluminum, you need a dedicated laser welding setup with the right pulse shaping and shielding gas—not a general-purpose laser etcher. I learned this the hard way in 2023 when we tried to use an engraver to make small aluminum weld spots. The spots looked fine under a lamp and failed under a pull test.

For cutout patterns, choose a Trotec with a stable workbed and good air assist. The bed matters more than the laser tube. Air assist pushes smoke out of the kerf and prevents char. If you're cutting pre-printed material, use the camera registration feature in JobControl. It will save you a ton of manual alignment time.
And add kerf offset to your CAD file. We found 0.15 mm of kerf on a 3 mm plywood cut with a 100 W CO2. If you design a press-fit slot without that offset, every part will be loose. Trotec's material database has starting values, but your actual kerf changes with speed and focus.
The quality manager's rule on price and support
This is the part that gets ignored. When you ask for a quote, ask what's NOT included before you ask what's included. I've learned that the cheapest quote is rarely the least expensive machine after you add chiller, exhaust, lenses, training, shipping, and installation.
I like transparent quotes. The dealer who lists every line item—even when the total looks high—is usually the one that costs less in the end. The dealer who gives a single package number and says don't worry about it is hiding something.

2. What is your batch size? One-off pieces and hobby volume can live on a smaller machine. Fifty identical parts with tight tolerances need a machine that can maintain settings for hours.
3. What does a failed part cost? If it's just material and your own time, you can take risks. If it's a customer relationship and a rework cost, buy the more conservative setup.
Don't let a spec sheet make the decision for you. Maximum wattage is a vanity metric when your real problem is changing materials five times a day or keeping a cutout pattern within 0.1 mm.
There's no universal answer in the Trotec laser lineup. There's just the right answer for your shop. Start with the four scenarios above, ask for a test cut on your own material, and get everything in writing. A good laser pays for itself only when it matches the job.
