I'm the office administrator for a 42-person manufacturing company. That means I order everything from safety gloves to shipping boxes, manage about $120,000 a year in vendor spend across nine or ten vendors, and report to both operations and finance. So when our CEO asked me to research lasers in early 2024, I assumed it would be a straightforward equipment purchase.
It wasn't. It also turned out to be one of the best projects I've managed.
The backstory: why we needed a laser at all
We make custom leather patches for jackets and bags, plus a line of MDF components for display fixtures. Trotec’s quote for the Speedy 100 included installation, operator training, a starter software license, and a set of material test files. A “base price” from a generic vendor wouldn’t necessarily include any of that.
That was the first time I realized I was comparing apples to oranges. The Trotec Laser Speedy 100 price was higher than an unknown import, but the quoted scope was different. (Not that I expected a cheap import to perform the same, but I didn't know what I didn't know.)
The demo: the twist I didn't see coming

The leather engraving looked great. The MDF cutting was clean, and the rep showed me how to adjust power and speed settings for different resin content. I was about ready to sign.

He switched the Flexx from CO2 mode to fiber mode and ran a serial number on the aluminum. It was crisp, repeatable, and done in about 30 seconds. Our current process used a chemical etcher that needed a 24-hour lead time and a hazmat disposal fee. I remember standing there thinking: Oh no, this changes the budget.

I also asked about financing. Trotec offered a lease option, which made the decision easier for our finance team. The budget line was “rental expense” for the first year instead of a huge capital outlay, and that changed the conversation with my VP.
Installation: the part nobody talks about
The machine arrived on schedule. Then the exhaust contractor hit a steel support beam in the wall and said we would need an inside blower and flexible duct instead of a straight run. That added $1,200 and two days. Not Trotec’s fault—our building is old—but it was real money and real time.
If I had planned the installation during the research phase, I would have caught it. I didn’t. In hindsight, I should have taken measurements before ordering and asked Trotec’s application team for their exhaust checklist. They had one, and they sent it as soon as I asked. I just hadn’t asked early enough.
I mention this because a laser engraver is not a desktop printer. You need ventilation, air assist, compressed air for the fiber source, electrical power, and a stable surface. The official manuals are detailed, but the building constraints are yours to discover.
Six months later: what actually changed
We’ve had the Flexx for about six months. The results are not “we fixed everything overnight,” but they’re close.

First, ask for material testing before you sign anything. Trotec engraved our exact leather and cut our exact MDF, not just their demo materials. That’s what made me comfortable.
Second, don’t let “Trotec Laser Speedy 100 price” be your only search. The Speedy 100 is a great CO2 machine, but the Flexx was the right call for us because we needed both CO2 and fiber capabilities. You might be in the same position, especially if your product line evolves.
Third, budget for installation and training. It feels like an upsell until the exhaust contractor looks at your wall.
Finally, trust the process, but push back on the timeline. We had two weeks to decide before the year-end capital budget expired. Normally I would have run a longer side-by-side test. With more time, I’d renegotiate the maintenance contract and ask for a training session for our second shift operator. But I did the best I could with the deadline we had, and the machine has already paid for itself in saved outsourcing costs.
The laser itself is just a tool.
